Dear Fediverse, suggestions for forum software

I am looking into forums for a group of people who would like to maintain their study group during shelter-in-place, but a subset of them dislike Facebook. Assume the users are generally comfortable with mobile phones and browsers. I am interested in other people's recommendations and experiences. So far, I am considering:

* phpBB

* FlaskBB (because I know Python)

* Discourse

Any others I should be considering? FLOSS preferred.

Ty in advance!

@cstanhope
Discourse is awful.
But a forum instead of Facebook? Maybe something like Movim, Salut à Toi or Manyverse would be more fitting.

@STP_KITT Solutions built on XMPP... Interesting! Thanks for the ideas!

@cstanhope You're welcome! Yes, only Manyverse is not based. Make sure to check some reports about experiences users of those systems made since I can't tell you how stable & practical they are in daily use. I don't think it's beneficial for FOSS projects if they get recommended to the general public before being ready for primetime since there's often just one single chance with many people.

@STP_KITT I'm doing my best to research this and recommend something that will work for them.

@STP_KITT Oh, and people's suggestions here have been invaluable for my research. :)
